The Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Bioinformatics

The Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Bioinformatics (BSBI) is a well-crafted program that aims to increase students' understanding of biological processes. The proposed program has been developed after consultations will stakeholders from academia and industry. The program will give a bird's eye view of the basic concepts in molecular cell biology, outline the complexity of human genome and DNA data and describe the kind of computer technology that is necessary to understand the cell's behavior. The courses in the program cover topics such as: current software developed especially for biologists, computer and mathematical cell models and IT systems and software that play an important role in bioinformatics.

Course Structure

The ten (10) semester program includes both theoretical and practical courses. Broadly speaking, the theoretical foundation is laid during the first four semesters and this knowledge is consolidated by inclusion of more practical courses in the final six semesters. This program aims to ensure both technical and managerial competencies.

The Bachelor of Science (Honors) in Bioinformatics includes coverage of biochemistry and molecular biology. An understanding of the molecular basis of life and the role of the genome will be emphasized. Students will learn how to understand data structures and algorithms, databases and the internet. In short, the program will teach students how to become a computing professional. In addition, bioinformatics itself will be taught through specialized modules. Studentswill learn two fields and the link between them. That is, they will know how to bring out the best of modern biology and computing.

Learning Outcomes

Ability to apply basic science concepts as foundations to biomedical science analysis and design.

    • Ability to interpret complex biological information and perform analysis of sequence data using sophisticated bioinformatics software, and program software when needed.
    • Ability to apply principles of bioinformatics analysis to solve problems at the interface of information technology, computer science and medicine.
    • Knowledge in fundamental methods of systems analysis and design and be able to apply design principles to solve problems in medicine and biology.
    • Ability to apply the scientific method as a means to obtain understanding of biomedical processes.
    • Good team working skills and ability to make quality presentations of their bioinformatics projects.
    • Awareness of the process, value, and potential of research in bioinformatics in a wide range of application.

Program Duration

The BSc (Hons) course lasts for a total of ten semesters amounting to 171 credit hours. This gives an average load of 17.1 credit hours /semester.
